What to Expect at a Psychiatric Emergency Room
If you or a loved one goes to a psychiatric emergency room in Las Vegas, here is what typically happens. After arrival, a triage nurse will assess the level of urgency. A psychiatric provider will then conduct a clinical evaluation, which includes questions about current symptoms, medications, substance use, and safety concerns. Depending on the evaluation, the care team may recommend inpatient admission for stabilization, a referral to a crisis stabilization center, or discharge with a safety plan and outpatient follow-up referrals.
Wait times vary depending on the facility and time of day. It is helpful to bring a list of current medications, insurance information, and an emergency contact. If you are accompanying someone in crisis, your support and presence can be extremely valuable during the evaluation process.
